LeanXcale was born with a vision to be the next great database technology bridging the gap between the operation data world and the analytical data world.

Our story

LeanXcale is rooted in deep technical research into distributed systems and data management. The professors leading the Distributed Systems Lab (LSD) at TU Madrid (UPM) decided to discard all the research done for 15+ years of research and start from scratch to conceive and architect a radically different transactional manager that could scale without limits. It took more than nine months research  to produce the first version of the algorithm, but the results were beautiful and elegant, the perfect solution solving the biggest and most problematic bottleneck in databases for decades.

Then, the research team sought European R&D funding, got a series of grants, and a research prototype was produced in 2010 and further perfected in iterations through 2015. In 2010 a patent was filed on how to scale query processing and in 2011 another patent was filed to protect the invention on ultra-scalable transactional management. Both patents have been recently granted.

The change

In the middle of the process, one of the founders started to consider the idea of the startup company. He spent a week in Silicon Valley giving a few talks at top-tech companies such as HP, Microsoft, Salesforce-Heroku and EMC-Greenplum (now EMC-Pivotal). From the excellent reaction he received at the cradle of technology, he decided to prepare himself for the mission of bringing this new, diruptive technology to market. He took entrepreneurship training from his university, TU Madrid (UPM), an institution very active in creating startups through its ActuaUPM entrepreneurship program (creating 20+ startups per year).

At this point, it was clear that the solution could go to market and be very competitive. In 2014 LeanXcale was presented to the EIT Digital Idea Challenge startup competition where it won one of the top awards in the Future Cloud Category. In Mid 2015 one of the founders, Dr. Ricardo Jimenez, abandoned his professor and scientific career to become the CEO of the company.

The transition would not have been simple, had not the newly established team been mentored and guided by Glenn Osaka, a successful entrepreneur from Silicon Valley and former VP at several big tech companies (HP, Cisco, Juniper Networks) and also member of PayPal first advisory board when they started at the first floor of a carpet shop in Silicon Valley.

EIT Digital coached LeanXcale during 2015 providing valuable help and hosted LeanXcale offices. Also, the European Framework Programme has played and continues to play a key role in funding the R&D leading to disruptive innovations of LeanXcale. In 2017, LeanXcale was selected by Red Herring as one of the top 100 European startups of the year.

A prime example of this is when the company was incorporated a new technology started to be invented, KiVi, a proprietary ultra-efficient storage engine with operational and analytical capabilities.

The radical approach of LeanXcale resides on our philosophy of developing new technology from the ground up rather than copying or trying to improve existing solutions. Today, LeanXcale’s mission is to constantly invent and innovate. A prime example of this is when the company was incorporated a new technology started to be invented, KiVi, a proprietary ultra-efficient storage engine with operational and analytical capabilities. The technology is ready today and will be part of the first public release of the LeanXcale database. This approach enables enterprises to provide truly disruptive solutions to customers who have decided to undertake the digital transformation and evolve into data-driven companies by becoming early-adopters of disruptive technology from new players that challenge the market, such as LeanXcale.
